When creating Tudor, Hans Wildorf’s intention was to bring to the market an affordable Rolex alternative. A brand to martyr prestige, a marquee to share Rolex’s history, recognition, and watchmaking pedigree without the Rolex price. Vintage-era Tudor Subs are Rolexes in disguise. The oyster case back, folded bracelet, crown, acrylic crystal, and stampings are holdovers, supplanted directly from the magnate, while powering the hands and cyclops date is a mechanical 2748 ETA movement. The differences are akin to a modern Land Cruiser and GX550; similar skin and offerings with different powertrains. The ‘Snowflake’ design, hands unique to the Tudor brand and square hour markers, was intended to increase visibility underwater and in low-light settings as well as to aid distinguish Tudor as its own entity, worthy of its own identity. The blue bi-directional bezel on this watch has melted into a soft and icy-blue and the dial remains unscathed. This specific watch is in excellent condition and has a beautiful dial that has not become textured over time like most of the other Snowflake dials. The insert has turned from blue to a lavender color and has that ghosted effect as seen on other Submariner’s. Case is excellent as well and retains the original bevels.
