Description: Perhaps the most well known nickname given to a vintage Rolex would be the infamous “red-sub.” There are 6 dial variants for Red Submariner’s and all vary slightly differently. The MK4 is famously known for its bright red text over the others as its red font is printed over white font, resulting in a brighter red than the other more maroon type reds as they are printed directly on to the black dial. The MK4 is also known for being the first Feet First Submariner, as the depth rating is given in Feet first before meters. This change was largely due to Rolex’s primary market switching to America vs the metric centric countries it was focused on prior. This particular Red Submariner is quite special. It has a truly unpolished magnificent case with large fat bevels which were known in this early 70’s period. The dial is a beautiful yellow patina marker example. This contrast amazingly against the black insert that has faded into blue over many years of wear. As collectors become more and more entrenched in vintage, having a perfect dial is not enough; owners begin hunting original profiled cases that are not polished or over polished, as this practice over the years changes the shape and profile of the case. The bracelet on this watch is a later 70’s replacement it seems and has some stretch to it. We recommend the new owner send it in for a refresh, something we can assist with.
