Description: This is not something we typically see but having dug into the well written description and history of the watch by “A Collected Man” we were always interested in seeing one in the flesh.
“Released in 1994, this watch was created to honor the 400th anniversary of the passing of renowned geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator. The Mercator stands out with its twin retrograde hands, shaped like a compass, indicating hours on the left and minutes on the right. It is powered by Vacheron Constantin’s automatic caliber 1120/2. Produced over a span of about 10 years, only 638 pieces were made.”
This watch was the brain child of Jean and Lucie Genbrugge and in collaboration with Vacheron and in rare fashion, their names are engraved on the watch as well, something rarely done or seen on watches. Besides the beautifully engraved dial, the 36mm case houses an untraditional display of time. The two hands tell hours and minutes but features a jumping hour and minute hand. The caliber 1120/2 is incased in a solid gold case.
This particular example showcases a map dial featuring the America’s as opposed to the more common Europe, Asia, and Africa dials. Comes with 3 leather straps as shown.
